Mold has been associated with various health conditions. Exposure can bring on adverse respiratory and allergic type symptoms. These can be pronounced in those that already have a chronic respiratory condition like environmental allergies, bronchitis, pneumonia and asthma. Molds have also been linked to more potentially serious health issues.
Unfortunately, there is no foolproof way to eliminate every single mold spore and mold growth in any indoor environment. Mold experts recommend fixing any moisture problems in the home or business, because moisture or dampness is a causative factor in mold growth. Molds are fungi that thrive in dark, closed-in airless spaces that are damp or wet.
1. Assess and fix source of moisture – repair leaky pipes, replace dripping faucets.
2. Vent moisture sources directly outside – bathrooms, kitchen hoods, dryers etc.
3. Install or use ventilation/exhaust fans over stoves when cooking, near dishwashers and while cleaning with water.
4. Keep indoor humidity levels down by turning on air conditioners and/or using dehumidifiers in damp areas.
5. Install or increase insulation on common condensation places like window panes, around doors, outside walls, attic roofs, under floors and surrounding exposed pipes.
6. Clean up mold off of harder surfaces with appropriate cleaner – tubs, showers, bathroom tiles etc. Softer and more absorbent surface items, like some ceiling tiles or wall insulation, might need removed and replaced.
7. Avoid placing carpeting in spaces with increased and uncontrolled moisture condensation and/or higher humidity levels – concrete basement or garage floors for example.
8. Provide more ventilation into areas prone to moisture by opening windows and turning on circulation fans.
9. Never use damp building materials in any construction project. Wipe off, and allow to completely dry first.
10. Call in professional mold specialists if mold is found.
